Since 2017 Umdasch Group Ventures is involved in the disruptive innovation of 3D construction scale printing. We hold a 30% stake in Contour Crafting (CC Corp) which is headquartered in El Segundo, California. CC Corp is the technological pioneer in 3D construction scale printing of buildings, structures and infrastructure since the invention of this technological concept by USC Prof. Dr. Berok Khoshnevis as early as in 1996.
CC Corp has been awarded a Rapid Innovation Fund contract in the domain of large and construction scale 3D printing by the US Department of Defense (DoD), effective July 25th, 2018. The outcome of the $3 million research and development contract funded by DoD is expected to be a technology which, among other applications, will effectively respond to disaster relief.
Berok Khoshnevis, the inventor and founder of CC Corp, and his team are developing and building deployable robotic systems for 3D printers which enable quick and robust construction of infrastructure and structures, i.e. social housing. House shells (single-storey) up to 200m² are printed within 48 hours at the construction site and in one shot. However, CC Corp is a very versatile technology firm, with substantial additional activities:
- CC Corp is also involved in applications for planetary construction. Berok Khoshnevis has won two NASA international competition Grand Prizes (2014, 2016) for his accomplishments in this field. Contour Crafting has been working with NASA on solutions for the construction of infrastructure in our solar system, particularly on Mars and moon.
- Furthermore, CC Corp is actively involved in developing and eventually building robotic systems for 3D printing applications to substantially improve established processes in other major global industries (outside the construction sector).
- Also, applications using the patented SSS (Selective Separation Shaping) technology is another field of activity for the company. Especially 3D printing with metals could be revolutionized by SSS.
